Oregon County

Oregon County was officially organized on 14 February 1845 and was named for the Oregon Territory in the northwestern United States. Alton is the county seat. Oregon County is bordered as follows:

  • south by Arkansas (Randolph, Sharp and Fulton Counties)
  • north by Shannon County
  • east by Ripley County
  • west by Howell County

Oregon County was claimed by the Osage until 1808. Charles Hatcher was the first settler, probably in 1809. Early pioneers were largely from Kentucky and Tennessee and some further East. The first county seat was in Thomasville on the Eleven Point River on land given by John and Matilda Thomas. In 1859, the county seat was moved to Alton.
